My dad passed along this blog post. I think it is pretty accurate and I love the last two sentences of the post.
"In countries such as France, Germany and Japan, national identity is a given for most people, a stereotype to which they are pressured to conform. American identity is more fluid and personal, more experimental. It’s harder that way, but probably more rewarding as well."
